Being able to draw upon the incredible resources available through the Center, and its effective outreach programs that use novel and innovative methods grounded in solid science, ensures staying at the forefront of the mission of protecting public health and accelerating the integration of advanced concepts of sustainable thought into mainstream living.
John F. (Jack) McCarthy, Sc.D., C.I.H., is President of Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc. (EH&E), a private multidisciplinary engineering and management consulting firm based in Needham, Massachusetts. Dr. McCarthy specializes in research and communication of environmental risk and developing creative solutions to complex, multifactorial environmental and occupational issues. Jack has led large interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement effective, and unique, solutions for corporate, government and non-profit organizations to improve their environmental performance. Examples range from eliminating potential harmful emissions from fabrics and materials to developing innovative ways for building owners to track and take action on “stealth” energy wasters to better achieve their performance goals. Jack’s teams are known for being innovators in identifying meaningful and quantifiable environmental project goals and implementing “evidence based designs” for their achievement. He has been the Principal Investigator for Federal studies under the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and has supported the US Surgeon General’s office. Dr. McCarthy has authored more than seventy technical papers and book chapters and co-edited the Indoor Air Quality Handbook (McGraw-Hill 2000), a comprehensive reference for building owners and managers regarding indoor environmental concerns.
Dr. McCarthy holds a B.S. in biology from Boston College, an M.S. in industrial hygiene and environmental health sciences from Harvard University, and a Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) in environmental science and physiology from Harvard University. Dr. McCarthy is certified in Comprehensive Practice by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
